Our neighbors in Nebraska need some help due to unprecedented flooding. Here are some guidelines and resources.

Why giving cash is better
Unless you live near a disaster area, sending money may be the best option. In many instances, donated items hinder the recovery effort and raise the cost of the recovery cycle. Transporting items long distances raises the cost and then the receiving, sorting, warehousing, and distribution of unknown items at the disaster site can delay the process more. In many cases, the areas affected end up being dumping grounds for unwanted items. This "second-tier" disaster has been seen all over the world, as well as here in the United States. Excessive donations of clothing and blankets hindered relief efforts in Joplin, MO after their tornado and after in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. A monetary donation allows the charities working on the ground to quickly purchase the supplies they need to address the ever-changing needs of those affected.

Give to an established charity
Oftentimes, crisis of large scale and coverage enable certain individuals to take advantage of your generosity and pocketing your donation for their own personal benefit. Do your research to find a charity with a proven track record of success. Look to see if the organization you're giving to is a registered public 501(c)(3).
