The Metering Division reads electric & water meters, connects & disconnects utilities when someone moves in or out, re-reads, tests & calibrates electric meters and maintains records associated with the testing. They wire & verify all commercial services throughout Gillette for new & existing services.

The City of Gillette began installing radio-read meters throughout the city during the late 1990's. Meter readers use a hand-held processor fitted with a transmitter to remotely read both electric and water meters. The transmitter sends a low frequency signal to the meter to "wake it up" then pulls in the reading. In 2003, the City purchased a mobile data reader that is mounted in a truck, which enables the meter reader to drive by and collect readings at a greater distance without leaving the truck.
